By the same token, Ron Greenwood was hardly a Northerner, despite being born up there. Raised in London, he was a Brentford fan as a kid.

Ted - I made the mistake of believing something on t'internet. I read that Jim was born in Edmonton, Canada. Complete bollox of course. And even though Sir Geoff was born in Lancs he had lived in the Chelmsford area for years.

As for that Burnley game it was the first time I remember 'cup fever' taking over the Boleyn ground. I particularly recall that the south bank was absolutely heaving that afternoon.

This is a good read from "theyflysohigh"

I remember queuing up for ages with my mate to get tickets for the 6th round against Burnley then queuing up again for tickets for my Dad and brother bloody freezing it was too !!
For me that Burnley game was the best I've ever encountered at Upton Park and God knows how many were in the ground that day.

Cheers FC .... so that’s the difference. I think it’s impressive but when I mentioned to my kids today they thought it was “a lack of diversity” ... what they are taught at school I suppose !!

Mike, Clyde Best did play in two of the games but Mervyn Day was the only GK used in all rounds

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
So Brian Belton’s book of the 1964 FA Cup is The First & Last Englishmen .... A’s all players that year ( in every round?) for us were English. 45 years ago today we win with the last all English team - does this mean that we had a non Englishman play in the early rounds of 1975 ? Anyone know ? Surely it could only have been Bobby Ferguson or Clyde Best ? Or did Brian get it wrong ?

Standen wasn't an average cricket player either, I think he topped the bowling averages at one point?

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
I even used to follow Jim Standen cricket career he was a professional cricketer for Worcestershire, where he won a County Championship.....Amazing really !
The only blemish on Standens career was that he played for millwall.
Couldn't see where he was born in Canada .....James Alfred Standen (born 30 May 1935 in Edmonton, London)

Oh and he lived in Seven Kings where I was his paper boy.

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
I was there as a ten year old, and was lucky enough to be at the semi as well which was a truly memorable game, for all sorts of reasons.

That team was all English and nearly all from east London/Essex. Jim Standen was born in Canada and Sir Geoff in Ashton under-Lyne.
How times have changed.

You can’t blame the current board for the last 40 years.

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
Winning bugger all is an avenue of the West Ham way that our board seem to wish to preserve forever.

Still, at least they get to save on the cleaning costs of the trophy cabinet, so every cloud and all that...

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
Just a thought but the last time we won the FA cup was 1980. That means you have to be about 50 to remember winning the cup and closer to 60 to have had the full east end party experience that night!

Mad.

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
yep the draw were great and all the games starting at the same time on the first saturday in January, and real shocks by some team you have never heard of, not like nowadays when the likes of york chester barnet hartlepool etc are deemed non league clubs.

And me used to love the cup draws sadly those days have gone.

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
But you can't win a trophy if you're not interested. We start the season hoping for a top 6 place and end it trying to stay up. Not enough money in the cup, nobody cares. I'd love a decent cup run. Used to be my favourite games.

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
I had a brown leather ball that was like a rock once it got wet and dried.

I was born in 65 so missed this little golden era but remember well what was probably our greatest era from 75 to 86.

Being off work I've been on YouTube re-watching our greatest moments (there aren't enough)
I was at many of these games but when youb arch them now it's another lifetime.

We are well overdue another trophy.

Hahaha certainly do the lace would leave an indentation on your forehead :-)

Re: 56 Years Ago Today
Do you remember how heavy those balls got when they were wet? You wouldn't be allowed to head that ball nowadays, health & safety would call the game off!
